Millennium Community Center

밀레니엄 커뮤니티 센터는 교회가 주관하는 복합문화집회시설이다. 이 건물의 중심이 되는 과제는 많은 사람들을 대상으로 하는 문화집회시설이 도심에 고층 으로 들어섰을 때, 건물 안에서의 동선과 공간을 층별간에 수직적으로 어떻게 연결하는가 하는 점이었다. 엘리베이터를 이용했을 때 층별간 이동은 잘 이루어질 수가 있으나 공간적인 연결은 부재하게 되며, 가고자 하는 곳을 쉽게 찾아가기에는 부적합한 것이다. 8층 높이의 건물이 시각적으로 그리고 동선상으로 모두 연결되게 하기 위해 도로면에서부 터 5층까지 이르는 경사면을 도입하였다. 이 경사면을 따라 램프가 올라가고 이 램프 주위 는 실내 조경이 된다. 램프와 조경으로 처리되는 부분 외의 남은 부분은 계단식으로 처리 되어 노천극장과 같은 다목적 공연장 또는 휴식처로 이용하게 한다. 이 경사면 공간은 노 천극장과 램프사이에 있는 세 개의 기둥을 제외하고는 무주공간이라고 할 수 있고, 그 위 에 역시 비스듬히 떠있는, 건너편 공간으로 연결하는 두 개의 브릿지가 매달려 있다. 건물의 외곽을 따라 3m폭으로 공간이 돌아가는데 이것은 3m폭의 구조물이 되어 60m정도 중앙부분을 가로 지르는 구조물을 지지하게 된다. 아울러 이 공간은 계단, 엘리베이터, 덕트 등의 서비스 공간으로 사용되고 건축적으로는 외곽에 두개의 면을 만들어 건물 표면 의 변화가 입체적이 되게 하고 있다. 고층화되어 있는 고밀도의 공간을 여유 있는 개방된 공간으로 만드는 것과 수직적인 층간 이라고 할 수 있는 건물의 내부를 환기나 조명 그리고 조경에 이르기까지 자연환경과 같이 만드는 것이 밀레니엄 커뮤니티 센터의 설계 목표인 것이었다. 건물기능의 입체적 배치 및 이에 이르는 입체적인 동선과 공간의 조명, 냉난방, 배연 및 피난을 위한 계획은 극히 복잡한 것이었다. 그리고 60m가 넘는 구조물을 입체적으로 엮는 일 또한 간단한 일이 아니었다. 이 모든 일 에 컴퓨터라는 도구는 많은 역활을 하여 주었고 또 가능케 해주었다. 서울의 많은 건물들이, 공공문화시설까지도 시민들에게 친절하게 열려있지 않은 것을 많 이 본다. 밀레니엄 커뮤니티 센터는 도시의 한복판에서 시민들에게 그리고 지나다니는 보 행자들에게 온전히 열려있어 누구나 그리고 언제나 드나들 수 있어서 도시광장을 건물내부에 갖고 있는 건물이다.

The Millennium Community Center is a church and multi-use building. During the design process, we concerned ourselves with vertical circulation in a high-rise building at downtown of city of Goyang. Even though elevators enable people to move each floor, there is a problem which could have in trouble with connection and getting to places between each floor. Even though elevators enable people to move each floor very well, those could not connect each different function space. We designed an inclined space which connects from ground level to fifth level in the building for a solving problem. Designing ramp between a street and fifth floor of the building can connect physically between the site and building as well as visually. In addition Ramps can provide both vertical circulation and landscape in the building. And, staircases which are designed rest of the building used to connect between fifth floor and eighth floor in the building. There is an amphitheater where is open space for multipurpose above fifth floor. The inclined space is void except three columns between an amphitheater and ramps. And, there are two inclined bridges which are hung to connect two different spaces. The space where has three meters width by outside of building supports structure which cross over sixty meters at center. The space used serviced spaces like staircases, elevators, and mechanical rooms. In addition the space enables an exterior of building to make a building facade in three dimensions.

We pursued two points for the design purpose both exterior and interior. The one is for the exterior where design to feel a pleasant space from a dense high-rise building to low density open space. The other is for the interior where design to feel natural environment including lighting, ventilation, and landscape. The design complicated to consider a space program reflecting on each function, horizontal and vertical circulation, lighting, HVAC, and Egress. And, it was also hard to design a structure over sixty meters in three dimensions. Computational design method which always used in iArc Architects helped to design complicated all process.

There are a lot of buildings which has closed citizens, even public buildings, at Seoul. During the design process, we imagined that the Millennium Community Center could use all citizens who want to enter and walk an inside of building. Even though we had in troubles to finish a project, the Millennium Community Center could keep a space for the public.
