Paichai High School, growing up as an autonomous private high school, wanted a new dormitory. It is located on the site, used to be tennis court, gym and cafeteria, where are adjacent to Paichai middle school to the south. It is also faced on the Paichai Memorial Hall to the east. We proposed two concepts regarding the program and site condition; we suggested a wide corridor around an atrium to provide multi-purpose dormitory environment and active interaction between students. Also the lounge for students was designed to avoid the view of a middle school corridor as pushing and creating another corner of building. Construction expenses were critical and sensitive issue in the most high school projects. This project was no exception. We reviewed thoroughly from the construction schedule to reduce construction expenses. Primarily, we minimized the height of stairway (H: 2850) to reduce the wall quantity; void slab system has been applied and exterior panels and windows were designed as one system to be produced in factory. Also all circulations are focused on an atrium and it opens toward each dormitory room to guide student’s location. The Multi-purpose dormitory includes basketball court, physical fitness center and cafeteria on basement-levels. Classrooms and conference room are located on the first floor. As a multi-purpose dormitory with promoting various activities and educational environment, the Woonam Center inaugurates new types of dormitory for an autonomous private high school.
