먼저, 본래의 경사지를 절토하여 주차장으로 사용하고 있던 대지를 원형으로 복원하여 그 하부를 다양한 형태의 실습공간으로 활용하는 것이었으며, 그 다음으로는 자유로운 통과동선과 시선의 확장을 위하여 주 강의동 매스를 들어 올려 공중에 띄우는 것이었다. 그리고 이 두 공간을 하나로 엮어주기 위해서 둘 사이에 커다란 대공간을 계획하였다. 결국 이 아트리움은 건물의 허파가 되어 각각의 공간을 열어주고 확장시키는 역할을 하게 되었다. 모든 공간을 통합하고 재분배한다. 더욱이 이곳에 쏟아지는 충분한 빛은 생활의 활력을 주기에 충분하다.
또한 상부매스와 저층 바닥판 사이에서 펼쳐지는 다양한 공간의 관입은 대학생활의 다양한 활동이 가능하도록 배려되었다. 깨끗하게 떠있는 건물매스 아래를 통과하여 자연스럽게 캠퍼스 전체로 연결되는 널찍한 잔디 경사면은 건물 외부의 핵심을 이루면서 내/외부간의 대화를 유도한다. 이와 더불어 건물 매스 쪽으로 솟아오르는 잔디 슬라브는 천창과 연결되면서 무한한 세계로 뻗어나간다. 수직/수평으로 펼쳐져 있는 사선들과 이를 휘감아 도는 매스의 결합이 만들어내는 공간의 변주는 이 건물의 또 다른 재미가 된다.
사실 이 구성은 대립에서부터 시작하였다. 저층부와 상층부 사이를 외부로 통과하게 하는 것과 내부의 아트리움으로 계획하는 것이 서로 맞서고 있었기 때문이었다. 그러나 심각하게 대립하던 이 문제는 대지를 쪼개어 들어 올리고 내림으로써 명쾌하게 해결되었다. 서로 조금씩 양보하여 얻은 결과물이었으며 이로 인해 공간은 더욱 풍요로워 질 수 있었다.
타인에 대한 배려와 사랑, 숨김없이 자신을 드러내는 것, 자기절제의 노력과 자신감으로 충만한 대학생활이 될 수 있도록 일조하는 건물이 되었으면 하는 바램이다.
Open space is the theme for the International Center. Open spaces are created for education purposes, students and the society. In the end, two spatial compositions are applied. The first composition is that the site used for parking lots is restored by cutting the ground around the existing slope and its low part is used as various practice spaces. The second is that the free circulation is made up and the main mass for the lecture is raised from the ground. In addition, a huge space between the two spaces is designed to tie them as one. After all, the atrium becomes the heart of the entire building and plays a role in opening and expanding each space. It integrates and redistributes every space.
Moreover, light led to the atrium is sufficient enough to give vitality. Penetration of various spaces between the upper mass and the bottom floor panels allows diverse activities in the campus. A wide grass slope connected to the campus through the lower mass is the main outdoor landscape and permits communication between the indoor and the outdoor spaces. In addition, the grass slab is linked with skylights and extends to an indefinite world. Other interests for the building are vertical and horizontal slant lines and the changing spaces by a combination of the masses. In fact, the formations start from the opposite. It means that two formations confront each other: organizing spaces between the lower and upper masses in the outdoor or indoor spaces. The confrontation, however, is clearly solved by splitting, raising and falling on the site.
By solving the problem, spaces are more opulent. The building is expected to make students enhance consideration, love, moderation and confidence.
