The Asan Institute for Policy Studies
진입 레벨에서 부터 4층 높이의 비정형적인 자유곡면으로 된 애이트리움이 그것이다. 건물의 내부동선은 이 애이트리움에 노출되어 있어 건물을 사용하는 사용자의 움직임은 이곳을 통하게 되어있다. 에이트리움은 건물 중앙에 자연 채광을 가능하게 하여 주면서 대류에 의한 자연환기도 가능케 하여주는 역할을 하고 있다. 이 건물의 구조는 중앙의 비정형 자유곡면의 에이트리움 구조와 외부 유리벽의 멀리온(Mullion) 그리고 250mm의 평판 슬라브(Flat Slab)으로 되어있어 층고를 최대한 활용 하도록 되어있다.
냉방 배관 배선은 떠있는 바닥(Raised Floor)으로 통하게 되어있고 천정은 콘크리트 노출(Exposed Concrete)로 되어있다. 1층 로비래벨에 전시관과 카페가 있어 늘 열려있고 140석 규모의 작은 공연장이 있다. 에이트리움의 최상부에 있는 브릿지(Bridge)를 올라가면 경희궁과 서울시내가 내려다 보이는 지붕 정원(Roof Garden)으로 나가게 된다.
단순한 시스템으로 간결한 건물이지만 중앙의 자유곡면의 구조와 멀리온만으로 되어있는 외주부의 구조는 기술적으로 많은 도전이 있었던 건물이다.
The Asan Institute for Policy Studies is a three story building with a simple square glass form. This minimal form proceeds from the project’s location and proximity to the traditional Kyonghi Palace. Compared to the simple overall form of the exterior, the interior of the building has a dynamic energy that emerges from the bold free form atrium from the entry level to the four story high atrium. The building’s circulation is completely encapsulated in the atrium so that the users of the building cross through this area. The atrium is placed in the middle of the building allowing sunlight to come in, as well as natural ventilation to flow throughout the building. The 250mm flat slab is supported with the free curved atrium frame and steel mullion around the buildings perimeter.
All the plumbing and electric lines as well as the air supply goes through the raised floor and the ceiling is made of exposed concrete. First floor where the lobby is located is open to the public with a gallery, cafe, and a small theater with 140 seats. Towards the top of the building, users of the building can travel up the atrium bridge out to the roof garden where they can see the Kyonghi Palace and a grand view of the city of Seoul. Even though the building itself is restrained with a simple form, the central space of the free form surprises the visitors with a strong statement representing the Institutes ambitious mission.
